Reporting platform for EV charging cable theft

The rise of electric mobility not only brings benefits, but also new challenges. One of these is a phenomenon that has been appearing more frequently in recent years: the theft of charging cables from public charge points. What once seemed occasional is now becoming an increasingly significant issue affecting both users and operators of charging infrastructure. With the launch of a new reporting platform, EV Belgium aims to address this.

A growing issue that requires attention

Charging cable theft is not new, but until recently there was no central overview. Incidents were reported locally or sometimes not reported at all. As a result, it was difficult to accurately assess the scale of the problem, let alone take targeted action.

With EV Belgium’s new reporting platform , it is now possible to register both recent and historical incidents. This is an important step: the more data is available, the better the phenomenon can be understood.

Why data collection is crucial

The reporting platform forms the basis for a data-driven approach to tackling cable theft. By centralising reports, patterns can be identified, such as:

  • Geographical hotspots where theft occurs more frequently

  • Specific times when criminals are most active

  • Possible links with types of charge points or infrastructure

With these insights, charge point operators, cities and other stakeholders can take targeted preventive measures. Examples include additional security at high-risk locations, improved lighting, or technological solutions such as lockable cables or cables equipped with dye-pack systems.

Support for authorities

An additional benefit of the platform is the structured support it provides to law enforcement and policymakers. A file is created for each reported incident, giving authorities better insight into the nature and frequency of this type of crime.

This enables not only reactive but also proactive measures. Targeted inspections, adapted regulations or collaboration with local authorities can be implemented more effectively.

Collaboration as the key to success

The success of this initiative largely depends on the participation of the sector and its stakeholders in actively reporting incidents. EV Belgium therefore calls on all involved parties to systematically report every incident — including attempted thefts — via the platform.

This collaboration is essential. Only by sharing information and working together can the sector develop solutions that are both widely supported and effective.

Towards a safer charging infrastructure

The electrification of mobility is a crucial pillar of the energy transition. A reliable and secure charging infrastructure is indispensable in this regard. Initiatives such as this reporting platform demonstrate that the sector is aware of the challenges and is actively working on solutions.

By creating insight into cable theft and enabling targeted actions, EV Belgium is taking an important step towards a robust and future-proof charging network.
